Title

A RESOLUTION OF A DECLARATION OF CIVILITY IN ORLAND PARK

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Village of Orland Park is committed to fostering a culture of respect and understanding, where diverse perspectives and ideas can thrive; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Illinois Municipal League and the United States Conference of Mayors have recognized the importance of civility in public discourse; and,

 

WHEREAS, elected leaders should lead by example, listen actively, respond thoughtfully, and focus on policies rather than personalities; and 

 

WHEREAS, we acknowledge that we are all striving to support and improve our community and that we each may have different ideas for achieving this objective, and

 

WHEREAS, we believe that local leaders should be an example of positivity and hope, setting an example for others to follow; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Village President and Board of Trustees are dedicated to promoting civility through listening, respectful dialogue, and a shared commitment to improving our community; and,

 

WHEREAS, in order to formally declare this commitment to civil discourse and to express concern for the common good and wellbeing of all residents of the Village of Orland Park, the Village President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Orland Park hereby adopt this Resolution in the best interests of the Village and its residents.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Village President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Orland Park pledge as follows:

 

SECTION 1

 

The foregoing recitals shall be and are hereby incorporated as findings of fact as if said recitals were fully set forth herein.

 

SECTION 2

 

Embracing Civility

 

We pledge to foster an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected. We commit to:

                     Listening actively and responding thoughtfully

                     Upholding the principles of our Constitution and promoting a culture of respect and dignity for all individuals

                     Engaging in constructive dialogue that honors diverse perspectives and ideas

                     Choosing words carefully and speaking truthfully without malice or distortion

                     Discouraging violence, prejudice and incivility by understanding that we each may have different ideas for achieving our objectives.

 

SECTION 3

 

Embodying the Values of Civility

 

We pledge to embody qualities that support a civil society, such as:

                     Gratitude for the contributions of others

                     Humility in our approach to decision-making

                     Openness to new ideas and perspectives

                     Public service with integrity and compassion

                     Propriety in all interactions

                     Kindness and empathy towards one another

 

SECTION 4

 

Leadership by Example

 

Our elected officials pledge to sign the Civility Pledge and adhere to it in their official actions, demonstrating a commitment to civility that inspires others to the best of our abilities. 

 

SECTION 5

 

Celebrating Our Commitment

 

A signed copy of this Resolution will be displayed prominently in Village Hall, serving as a reminder of our shared commitment to civility and respect for one another.

 

By adopting this Declaration, we affirm our collective desire to build a brighter future for all Orland Park residents, founded on the principles of kindness, compassion, and mutual respect.
