Title/Name/Summary

RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING VILLAGE OF ORLAND PARK PURCHASING POLICY FOR APPLIANCES AND LIGHTING

Body

WHEREAS, the Village of Orland Park recognizes that minimal modifications to existing purchasing policies and bid specifications can ensure that durable, low maintenance, and energy efficient equipment and products are purchased; and,

WHEREAS, the Energy Star program is a collaboration established between United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy that utilizes science-based criteria and provides helpful tools by which to evaluate products, equipment, and energy conservation practices; and,

WHEREAS, the purchase and use of Energy Star products can help the lower the Village’s utility bills, energy use, and related greenhouse gas emissions; and,

WHEREAS, lower energy usage reduces the burning of fossil fuels - natural gas, coal, and oil - used to power industrial processes and in turn reduces the level of detrimental air emissions of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), resulting in improved air quality and the health and well-being of Orland Park residents and residents of the Chicago metropolitan region and beyond; and,

WHEREAS, Energy Star approved fluorescent lighting (Compact Fluorescent Lamps and light fixtures) preserves energy resources, decreases electric bills, requires at least 2/3 less energy (watts) than standard lighting and lasts up to 10 time longer; and,

WHEREAS, the Village of Orland Park belongs to Clean Air Counts, a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions and improve air quality, and is committed to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and,

WHEREAS, local and regional partnerships that unite government, business, and residents, in a voluntary effort to reduce harmful smog-forming emissions, can effectively enhance regional air quality.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved by the Village President and Board of Trustees, that the Village of Orland Park, Cook and Will Counties, Illinois hereby requires the purchase of Energy Star appliances, light fixtures, and light bulbs for the operation, construction, and maintenance of all Village owned buildings.
