PLANNING OVERVIEW:

Public signs in Orland Park vary in design, size and purpose.  This discussion will involve a review of different designs to attempt to achieve a consensus on a series of images that provide a distinct identity for Orland Park.

DISCUSSION:

The Village has reviewed sign options in the past.  Recent designs have generally leaned toward low walls of masonry materials with routed lettering.  Examples of this include 131st & LaGrange Road at Southmoor Commons, 147th & LaGrange Road at Walgreen’s and 143rd & Will-Cook Road at Walgreen’s.  A more stylized sign is at 147th & LaGrange for the Village Center.  It includes masonry and recalls the Village Hall architecture.

Another sign type has been developed by South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association for the I-80 Corridor.  It utilizes cut out steel to form a prairie grass image with the name of the community.  The design work includes related landscaping to emphasize prairie grasses and limestone outcroppings.  These materials and plants are all relevant to the south suburbs’ natural history and economic history.

Staff will bring numerous examples of signs to the meeting for discussion.
