Title
Contracted Snow Fighters - Wage Increase
History
Each season, the Village of Orland Park contracts out a portion of our snow plowing operations to independent firms or individuals. Our contractors are assigned streets that are difficult and time consuming to plow during heavier snow events. These independent contractors are vital in our snow-fighting program. Without their assistance, it would be impossible to clear our streets in a timely manner.
With the escalating fuel costs this season as compared to last season, the Public Works Department would like to increase the hourly wage of our contractors from $90 to $95. This amount is comparable to wages paid in our area for parking lot and private street plowing. This increase will help us remain competitive and, hopefully, ensure acquiring quality contractors for this season and in the future. Therefore, it is recommended that an increase in the hourly wage of pay for the Village of Orland Park independent snow plowing contractors from $90 to $95 be approved for the upcoming 2008/2009 Snow Season.
On September 8, 2008, this item was reviewed and approved by the Public Works and Engineering Committee and referred to the Board for approval.
Financial Impact
The Public Works Department has budgeted funds for Contract Snow Plowing in the Fiscal Year 2008/2009 Budget.
Recommended Action/Motion
I move to approve increasing the hourly wage for Contracted Snow Fighters from $90 per hour to $95 per hour for the 2008/2009 Budget Year.
