A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SENATE BILL 1313, AFFIRMING LAW ENFORCEMENT COORDINATION WITH FEDERAL IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES

WHEREAS, on January 15, 2024, the Village of Orland Park adopted Ordinance No. 5868, formally declaring that it is not a sanctuary city and affirming its commitment to comply with federal immigration laws; and


WHEREAS, the Village of Orland Park remains steadfast in its dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of its residents; and


WHEREAS, effective cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities is essential in addressing criminal activity and enforcing existing immigration laws; and


WHEREAS, Illinois Senate Bill 1313 seeks to repeal the Illinois Trust Act, restore the ability of local and state law enforcement agencies to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in cases involving undocumented individuals charged with criminal offenses; and


WHEREAS, the Illinois Trust Act currently restricts such collaboration, preventing law enforcement agencies from assisting federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws, thereby creating potential public safety risks; and

WHEREAS, the Village rejects policies that prioritize political ideology over public safety and opposes any law that shields individuals with criminal records from lawful detention and removal; and

WHEREAS, the Village of Orland Park supports local law enforcement’s discretion to cooperate with federal immigration authorities as they deem necessary to protect the community, free from state-imposed restrictions; and

WHEREAS, the Village prioritizes the safety of its residents and recognizes that law enforcement must have the necessary tools to address crime effectively, without artificial legal restrictions that impede cooperation; and
