Storage Area Network Upgrade - Expenditure Approval
History
The MIS Division has included funds in the FY 2007-08 budget to add a storage area network to the village’s computer system. With the demand of electronic storage of documents, pictures, and maps, the existing storage device which has been in place for five years has reached maximum capacity and can no longer meet the back-up needs of the Village.
The new system is based on a separate Storage Area Network (SAN) which can be used as a central storage location for data from several servers. In addition to storage, the new software aspect of this system will greatly enhance our ability to quickly “rebuild” a system in the event of a fatal hardware loss of the server. Off-site backups to tape can occur during business hours as well.
Staff has investigated several different types of SAN solutions and is recommending SWC Technology Partners as the preferred solution. The system will include:
Symantec Backup Exec Software $5,411.22
HP StorageWorks with 3.6TB of storage $17,161.00
Consulting Services $5,440.00
Total $28,012.22
The Village is eligible for government pricing from the Hewlett Packard Corporation under GSA Schedule GS-35F-4663G, and the Symantec Corporation under GSA Schedule GS-35F-4543G which is the lowest possible price. SWC Technology Partners is a government solutions provider authorized to GSA contract pricing from both HP and Symantec. SWC performed the installation of our firewall and anti-virus solution so they are very familiar with our systems and we are very pleased with the services they have provided.
The Finance Committee voted unanimously to approve this expenditure at their July 28, 2008 meeting.
Financial Impact
The FY 2007-08 budget for the SAN is $25,000 This expenditure is $3,012 over the original budget estimate but there are sufficient funds in the computer operating budget for the purchase.
