Art in the Park - Sculpture Selection

History

The Village of Orland Park’s Art in the Park program was created to use different forms of art to enhance parks and public areas in the village.  Late last year, the Village announced that three sites in would be available for the public display of sculpture.  The display sites were designated as:

144th Place and Ravinia - near the southwest corner of the intersection

14800 S. Ravinia - on the west side of the street near the Farmer’s Market sign

West Avenue and Ravinia - across the street from the Public Works buildings

A brochure with information was created and distributed through village buildings, Orland Park Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce, local colleges, train stations, and via the village website.  Additionally, the information was posted on the Chicago Artists Resource and www.sculpture.net <http://www.sculpture.net> websites and conveyed to artists groups such as Chicago Sculpture International.

A wide variety of submissions were received, including pieces from well-known and successful art programs such as the Navy Pier sculpture walk.  The submissions were reviewed by the Village’s Public Art Commission and evaluated on a 25 point scale.  The three highest scoring sculptures are being recommended for acceptance into the program.

Financial Impact

A stipend of $2,500 will be awarded to each artist for the display of their sculpture for a period of three years.  Funding for these stipends is available within the Officials budget.

Recommended Action/Motion

I move to approve authorizing the Interim Village Manager to contract with the selected artists for a total amount up to $7,500 for display of sculpture for the Art in the Park program.
