Title
High-Visibility Child Crossing Sign
(144th Street and Highland Avenue)
History
A resident and parent contacted PTAC pertaining to safety concerns for children who attend St. Michael Grammar School due to speeding vehicles traveling eastbound and westbound on 144th Street. The lack of sidewalks for students that walk to and from school, who exit the only dismissal door on the southwest side of the building, and drivers cutting through this area to avoid congestion on 143rd Street is leading to numerous close-call accidents as well.
The resident is requesting a ‘High-Visibility Child Crossing’ sign at the intersection of 144th Street and Highland Avenue to significantly enhance safety by alerting drivers to slow down.
Similar signs have been installed at other schools and parents are urgently asking for the same level of safety measures at St. Michael School. The requestor has spoken with several parents and the school administration who all understand the safety risks and support this request for a child crossing sign.
