Title
Pedestrian Signs and Crosswalk Stripping
(146th Street and West Avenue)
History
A resident contacted PTAC pertaining to safety concerns for pedestrians, especially children walking to school, crossing West Avenue at 146th Street. The sidewalk heading north on West Avenue ends at this intersection. Pedestrians, both walking and running, using the sidewalk on the east side of West Avenue must cross at this intersection in order to continue utilizing a sidewalk for northbound West Avenue. Due to vegetation, it is hard for motorists to see pedestrians when driving north and south on West Avenue. Children under the age of 14 are walking to one of the 4 schools all located within less than .4 miles of this intersection.
There is a signification amount of traffic due to schools, the use of Humphrey Fields, the new field being built at Doogan park, and the trails that connect to Rusting Oaks to the Civic Center. Most sidewalks off of Ravinia Avenue and around the Civic Center and Library have crosswalks. Ravinia Avenue has the same speed limit of 30 mph as West Avenue, but less vegetation near and around any of the crossings.
The resident is requesting the installation of ‘Pedestrian Signs’ and ‘Crosswalk Stripping’ at the intersection of 146th Street and West Avenue to make it safe for pedestrians, especially children walking to school, to cross West Avenue.
