OVERVIEW AND BACKGROUND

The petitioner proposes to construct a Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in front of the new Veteran’s Building, which was previously used as the Parks Administration building. The area of the proposed memorial is currently used as open space for the site. The Vietnam Memorial will consist of 6 flagpoles, memorial plaques, signs, and a bench along a circular brick paver path. Minor landscaping will also be incorporated in a bed of mulch located around the brick pavers. The memorial is oriented to the West, along the property line facing West Avenue. It can be accessed directly via the public sidewalk along West Avenue.

According to Section 6-302 of the Land Development Code, federal, state, and local government agencies are exempt from the provisions of the flagpole and flag general requirements. Therefore, the proposed flagpoles meet Land Development Code requirements.
