Orland Community Cares Program - Discussion

History

Orland Fire Protection District Acting Chief Michael Schofield and Lieutenant Mark Duke, OFPD EMS Coordinator, will address the Public Safety Committee to explain the Orland Community CARE Program. This is a cooperative effort to promote CPR and the use of AEDs in the Orland Park community.

Sixty one million Americans have cardiovascular disease resulting in approximately one million deaths per year. One third of these deaths are due to cardiac arrest - the sudden and unexpected loss of heart function.

When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, minutes and seconds count. Access to an automated external defibrillator increases the patient’s chances of survival. AEDs are portable electronic devices that diagnose life threatening cardiac arrhythmia and ventricular tachycardia in patients. Once diagnosed, the device assists in treating the victim through electrical impulses that stimulate the heart allowing the heart to re-establish its own rhythm.

Participating agencies will include the Orland Fire Protection District, the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Orland Park.

This cooperative community wide effort will help to educate the public on the lifesaving importance of learning cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and having access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

The Community CARE Program focuses on emergency services for cardiac issues through the use of CPR and automated external defibrillators (AED). The objective of the program is to increase sudden cardiac arrest survival rate in Orland Park and throughout the region.
