Title
An Ordinance Amending Title 2 of the Village Code to Create the Student Advisory Board and the Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Advisory Board
History
Students from Sandburg High School recently contacted the Mayor’s Office expressing interest in being appointed to an advisory board, initiating discussion on how to best include them. Staff felt that the opinion of younger residents would be important to have represented in the advisory boards and commissions. In previous representative surveys the Village performed, ages 18-30 are very underrepresented, falling short of village goals. In addition, the interested students showed an impressive level of interest and commitment; they prepared a presentation to the Mayor’s Office outlining the issues a Youth Commission would tackle. These facts demonstrate there is a need and a desire for youth input in Orland Park.
In conjunction with the Mayor’s recommendation, staff designed two new advisory boards to best capture the experience and life stages of younger people.
The Student Advisory Board captures the opinion of students, high school through undergraduate education, residing in Orland Park. This advisory board will focus on student civic engagement and volunteering.
The Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Advisory Board captures the opinion of youth early in their career who are based in Orland Park. This advisory board will focus on quality-of-life issues for younger residents.
